In response to the decline of commercial fishing in the Baltic Sea, a new port typology is being created in the German town of Sassnitz. Its purpose is to preserve fishing as a cultural heritage and make it accessible for visitors. Where else should locals and tourists experience up close how fish are landed and processed? The harbor atmosphere with local fishing vessels, passenger ships and the smell of the sea have always attracted landlubbers.
The "House of Fisheries" will become a new landmark. Being built in the harbor basin, it evolves from the wooden pier landscape and protrudes above the water. Behind the promenade, the colorful apartments of the elongated "Harbor Warehouse" are a reminiscence of fishing huts. The closeness of fishery and tourism offers fishermen new possiblities of income.
