The new building, composed of rental units and retail space, is located on Hoheluftchaussee; one of Hamburg’s main arteries leading to the city center. The primary concept is to fill a vacant lot and create high quality living space while accounting for high traffic volume.
The building is composed by a central nucleus with circulation leading to nine apartments. Each floor contains two apartments, except for the top floor where a single apartment with a spacious roof-terrace is planned. The first floor is conceived as an open office unit with another rooftop terrace.
The focus lies on a southward living with a view to the interior courtyard, thus avoiding the busy street on the opposite side. The floor plan is designed as an open system. The sleeping rooms are oriented towards the street while living and cooking spaces open to the south.
To counteract traffic noise, the building’s north-facing side is cloaked with an inhabitable double-skin façade, which functions similar to a loggia. The crystal-like and fully glazed street façade is divided into segments to underline the shape of each unit. These individual glass segments are tilted in various directions and covered with a window film which varies in brightness. The result is a colorful and ever-changing rhythm of reflected light.
